Verses:

You know I had to sit back and laugh the other day
I was in the car with this youngster when an original tune came on the radio
And he called it a remake of some current knucklehead artist
I don’t know about you, but I had to smile and shake my head about his lack of musical knowledge
So we had a conversation…

So as we continued into our conversation
I explained the difference between an original and an interpretation
I said an interpretation in the musical sense is the taking of another’s idea and perhaps replaying or retooling it with a little of your original flavor
What you’ve done is make it take a little different
But in no means are you the cook
You know?

An original, on the other hand, comes from your soul – your kitchen – so to speak And no matter who comes forward and tries to put a big kick drum or snare behind your music and call it “all new”
All they can do is repaint your picture…ya dig?
And then I let him hold some of my James Brown records…
